When we talk about a nursing chair, we don't only think about special furniture designed just for this purpose. Often all we need is what we already have at home, which is simply a comfortable armchair. If you are considering a new piece of furniture, look for one that meets the conditions listed below.
It is important to create a cozy retreat where you and your child will feel comfortable. The armchair is best placed near the crib. The idea is to efficiently but calmly put back a fed and sleeping toddler. Besides, feeding in the baby's room is less disturbing to the rest of the household. It's a good idea to have a cupboard or cart on wheels next to you, where you can stow the accessories you and your baby need. These include towels, breast pads, hand sanitizer, nipple cream, pacifiers, bibs, but also something to read and a glass of water. It's better to have all this on hand so you don't get up and disturb the baby.
The width of the seat must fit your figure and the baby you are holding in your arms. If you use a nursing pillow, take it into account, too. The seat must not be too narrow. Ideally, it should be a little wider than standard ones. Sitting down in it should not give you any problems, and neither should getting up. You can't squeeze between the armrests by force, even less so if you're holding a baby.
Wide, padded armrests will provide additional support. Being able to rest your elbow or forearm on them will allow you to find a better feeding position faster. It will also be more comfortable for your baby, whether you breastfeed or bottle-feed. You will hold its head more securely and relieve the strain on your shoulders. Even if the toddler weighs only a few pounds, you start to feel the weight after a few minutes. The armrests should also be the right height for your height, so you don't have to hold the baby in the air.
You will find that a seat with comfortable and springy filling is useful for a young mother in many situations. But it can't be too soft, or you'll sink into it. Just after giving birth, getting up from lower seats is easier. You will also appreciate it later when you want to carry your sleeping baby to its bed. Sometimes even a gentle noise can wreck half an hour of your efforts to get the little one to sleep.
The height of the backrest should be adjusted to your height. It is supposed to provide good back support, so it should not be too low. Ideally, it should reach your shoulder blades and be very springy. Many women struggle with back pain during pregnancy and after childbirth. If you have such ailments, you will find it useful to have an extra pillow or roller under your lower back. It is worth noting that a well-supported and comfortable posture makes feeding much easier. You also get less tired during long night-time meals, when you are fighting sleepiness and trying to stay calm at the same time.
A functional addition to a nursing chair for mothers is a footrest or a pouf, which greatly improves the comfort of sitting. Especially if you are not tall and have short legs. It's better to rest them comfortably than to hold them in the air. You will avoid swollen ankles and numbness. Having your feet slightly raised reduces pressure and discomfort in your lower back. You can sit deeper in your chair and get more comfortable while feeding. It is also a good idea to change your position even slightly every few minutes. Very often, you can buy poufs style-matched to the chair, allowing you to maintain stylistic consistency.
Don't forget that the chair in which you feed can get dirty, e.g. with milk or juice. With a small child, the risk of staining is high. So look for upholstery made of stain-resistant and easy-to-clean fabrics. This can be microfiber or structured fabric, which are resistant to friction. It's also worth investing in upholstery made of innovative materials. With fabrics that do not absorb water, you have more time to remove the liquid. You'll have time to put the little one safely back in the crib and collect the liquid. Fabrics that are easy to clean do not require invasive detergents in turn. All you need is curd soap, which does not contain irritants and substances that could be dangerous for the baby.
Although comfort is the most important thing, you often care about the nice appearance of the furniture and matching the style of your apartment as well. You don’t need to worry about this. There are many products in different styles on the market. Think about whether it will be a nursing room chair, or rather a piece of furniture located in a shared family living room. You can choose a universal beige-gray color scheme or something more lively for the interior. Check out the Dunas armchair from the Micadoni collection, which is available in several colors. At the same time, it has all the features of a comfortable nursing chair.
Is a nursing armchair useful?
In our opinion and that of many experienced parents - yes! The moments you spend nursing give you a chance to build a strong bond with your little one in a comfortable environment. The armchair is a safe and peaceful place where you spend time together, cuddle or play. Mothers and fathers can benefit from it - especially when the baby is bottle-fed.
The child will quickly begin to form positive associations with the place intended for meals - not only because of food but also sleep and relaxation time. This has a very soothing effect on it, and makes it easier for the baby to sleep through most of the night. Children accustomed to consistent evening rituals sleep much longer and more soundly. Most toddlers like this type of routine.
A nursing chair is a purchase for much longer than the infant period. It can remain in the child's room even after nursing is over. It still provides a comfortable and friendly environment for the baby. Ideas for its use are plentiful. It naturally becomes a place for cuddling before bed, reading bedtime stories together, playing and talking. Such moments stay with you and your baby forever.
Living room is a place, where we spend most of our free time. Here we take the rest, play with children and entertain our guests. All seems perfect when an apartment is spacious and well-lit. If you're a pet owner, you're likely all too familiar with the constant battle against pet hair on your furniture. Pets bring joy and companionship, but they also bring a considerable amount of hair that seems to cling to every surface, especially your couch. Pet hair not only makes your couch look untidy, but it can also aggravate allergies, reduce air quality, and shorten the lifespan of your furniture by working its way into the fabric fibers.
