Choose a rug large enough that at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs rest on it, typically 8x10 feet for a standard-sized room. A too-small rug tends to make the whole seating area look disconnected.
A king bed generally needs a rug at least 9x12 feet so it extends 18–24 inches beyond each side of the bed and frames the nightstands. This keeps the rug from looking like it's floating under just the mattress.
Center the rug under your main seating group so the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on it, leaving a consistent border of visible floor around the edges. In smaller rooms, all the furniture legs can sit on the rug instead.
Vacuum both sides first, then spot-clean stains with mild detergent and cold water, blotting rather than scrubbing so the mark doesn't spread. For a deeper clean, sprinkle baking soda, let it sit, then vacuum it up to lift odors and dust.
Price mostly comes down to material and construction — hand-knotted wool or silk rugs take far longer to make than machine-woven synthetic ones. Size, knot density, and country of origin also play a big role in the final cost.
